Canaan was gripped by a severe famine. Jacob sent his sons to Egypt (where they had a good food stockpile) to buy grain. When they got there, the viceroy gave them a run for their money, making life quite difficult. Eventually, it emerged that the viceroy was none other than their brother, Joseph, whom they had sold as a slave years earlier. Joseph invited his brothers to bring their father and families to Egypt to get by during the famine. Jacob was happy to relocate to be with his beloved son.

Canaan (Israel) is the land that God promised to Abraham (Genesis ch.17), to Isaac (Genesis ch.26), to Jacob (Genesis ch.28), and to Jacob's descendants the Israelites (Exodus ch.6). The promise was fulfilled when Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan (Joshua ch.3-4) and they inherited it.

Between Abraham and Moses, the land of Canaan saw the establishment of the Israelite patriarchs, including Isaac and Jacob, who was later named Israel. Jacob's descendants, the twelve tribes of Israel, settled in Egypt due to famine, leading to their eventual enslavement. Over time, God raised Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and back to Canaan, fulfilling the promises made to Abraham regarding the land and his descendants. This period encompasses significant developments in the identity and faith of the Israelite people.

Note that this does not apply to all of Abraham's descendants, since Ishmael was not included in the covenant (Genesis 21:12) but Isaac was (Gen. ch.26). Abraham's descendants moved to Egypt due to a severe famine in Canaan, which made it difficult for them to sustain themselves. Initially, Jacob and his family relocated to Egypt for food, where they were welcomed by Joseph, one of Jacob's sons who had risen to a position of power there. This migration eventually led to the Israelites settling in Egypt, where they would later face enslavement.
The descendants of Canaan, who encompassed the tribes of the Promised Land at the time of the Exodus from Egypt, were under a curse stemming back to the days of Noah and his sons. The Curse of Ham was laid down because of Ham's disregard for his father, and would cause all the descendants of Canaan, the fourth generation in the line of Noah through Ham, to serve the descendants of Shem, among which came forth Abraham, Isaac, Jacob who becomes Israel, Joseph, and the Hebrew people. In a much broader sense, God had chosen the Hebrew people as His own, and Canaan Land was the land God had promised the Hebrews.
