The descendants of Abraham, including his grandson Jacob and his family, went to Egypt during a famine in Canaan. Jacob's son Joseph had risen to power in Egypt and invited his family to live there. This migration eventually led to the Israelites settling in Egypt and later being enslaved.

What was an important action Abraham made?

An important action Abraham made was to leave his homeland in Ur and travel to Canaan in response to God's call. This decision to leave behind familiarity and trust in God's promise led to Abraham becoming the father of many nations and the starting point of what would eventually become the nation of Israel.

When did the Israelites leave Canaan for Egypt because of famine?

The Israelites went to Egypt during a time of famine in Canaan around 1700-1500 BCE, according to biblical chronology. This event is described in the Book of Genesis in the Bible, where it is said that Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob (Israel), interpreted Pharaoh's dream predicting the famine.

Did God call Abraham to leave the city of Babel?

* yes he did * No. In Genesis, the story of Babel is told immediately before the story of Abraham starts, but it is a completely different story. Abraham was called by God to leave his home in Ur of the Chaldees. This is a different place from Babel as well as a different time frame, as already mentioned. 1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. 4So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. Although the family history (genealogical record) of Abraham is mentioned in Genesis 11:10-32 it makes no mention of Abraham ever having been in Babel. It is possible that Abraham's city of Ur arose as did many others due to the dispersion if peoples necessitated by the confusion of languages at Babel, which had occurred earlier. The account of Babel is in Genesis 11:1-9, and although undoubtedly some of the ancestors of Abraham were around at the time of Babel it is thought that Abraham lived somewhat later. Did God call Abraham - Yes. Did God call him from Babel - no. It was from Ur.

It was because of famine (Genesis ch.46). It was part of God's plan, since Egypt would be the "iron furnace" (Deuteronomy 4:20) in which the Israelites would be smelted, removing the dross, and would grow into a nation ready to receive God's Torah.

According to the Bible, all the Hebrew people who left Egypt died in the wilderness, apart from Joshua and Caleb. However, all their decendents are said to have gone to Canaan.
