The confusion comes from the misunderstanding of Hell. The idea of some terrible underworld ruled by Hades comes from Greek mythology and not from The Bible. Many bibles translate Hades/Sheol, Tartarus, and Gehenna, as Hell. However, these three terms have very different meanings and significance, and in no way refer to the underworld of the living dead.

Hades/Sheol is the Hebrew/Greek word that is often rendered as Hell, but the literal translation is "Mass Grave" or the "Common Grave".

In reference to many translations of the bible saying "He (Jesus) was not abandoned to Hell/hades"

A better translation would render it as "He (Jesus) was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay" - NIV

Answer

The Bible does not say teach that Jesus went to Hell as you know it. No one has gone to Hell yet, not until after the Great White Throne Judgment will anyone go to Hell. There is a word that is often translated as Hell that is not the same Hell that you know, but is the Greek word Hades, the Hebrew word is Sheol.

There are several verses that people believe mean that Jesus went into Hell, but he actually went into Hades. One of the most versus I've seen used is Acts 2:31 which reads in the King James as:

"He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption."

However this word again is not Hell but Sheol. A more correct translation could say "the grave" as the New International Version does. Jesus was not left in Hell because he was never there, however he was in the grave, and he was not left there either.

Another passage that is often misconstrued is Ephesians Chapter 4 "8 This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." 9 What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?"

You can understand this one of two ways, either it means Jesus descended to Hell, or he didn't. If you claim the first, then that would also imply that the saints of the Old Testament were also in Hell until Jesus came to lead them away. The problem with this is when Jesus speaks of Lazarus and the rich man, the rich man gets sent Hades for torture and torment, but Lazarus was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man wanted Lazarus to come to him to just give him a drip of water, but Lazarus could not because there was a chasm, or a gulf, separating the two which could not be crossed. If Jesus had to go to Hell in order to receive the prisoners that would go to Heaven, the Lazarus would have been sent there to wait as well.

Jesus said a couple things on the cross to indicate where it is that he was for the 3 days that he was in the tomb. Jesus told the thief on the cross next to him in Luke 23:43 "Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.""

Jesus also said on the cross that he commits his spirit in to the hands of his Father, He also says "It is finished"

What was finished if not his mission to come and redeem? It was at that moment that our sins were taken care of. If Jesus going to Hell is the price that he had to pay for us, then everywhere it says that his blood paid the price in the Bible could not be true.

Hades seems to be a place split into two sections, one for the righteous and one for the unrighteous. The righteous would be sent to Paradise, aka Abraham's bosom, the Unrighteous sent to a place of torture awaiting the Great White Throne judgment.

Answer

The Bible mentions that He went to declare some sort of message to the inhabitants of Hades... a proclamation of victory is most likely. The Greek word used in 1 Peter 3:19 is not the word used for preaching in the sense of 'preaching the Gospel', but is the word for 'proclaiming' or 'publishing' . As such, Jesus is seen to be proclaiming His victory over death and Satan. He was not speaking in an evangelistic manner.

1 Peter 3:18-19

For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached to the spirits in prison;

Answer:

Hell is the absence of God. When Jesus took on the sins of the world, the presence of God left him.

Answer

All who had died from the beginning of the world were in hell. Jesus descended into hell to take his faithful who were waiting for him to heaven.

According to the bible he didn't he ascended into heaven

Also see:

"He (Jesus) was put to death in the flesh, but he was raised to life in the Spirit, in which also he went and preached to the disobedient spirits who were in prison in the days of Noah when God waited patiently while the ark was being built...For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead so that, although they have already been judged in the flesh like men, they might have life in the Spirit like God." (1 Peter 3:18-20; 4:6)

The first thing to note in this passage is that the Greek word "Hades"---translated "hell" in the Apostles' Creed---is the underworld of Greek mythology, not necessarily the place of permanent punishment of those utterly lost forever. Whatever preaching took place (as described in this passage from Peter) was, in my opinion, not in hell.

There is an apocryphal "Gospel of Nicodemus" (see link below) that gives an account of Christ's descent into Hell.

Chruch tradition still carrys a great deal of weight and there are multiple beliefs (Seven Deadly Sins, The Casting out of Lucifer and his Angels) that are alluded to in the Christian Canon but are actually recounted in apocryphal texts. This is because the Bible is just a fragment of Christian writings artificially carved out by the Council of Nicea.

To really understand Christianity one must study the three hundred years of Christian history that came before the "Bible" even existed and the influence of Zoroastiranism and Pagan religions on Christianity and Judaism.

A:1 Peter 3:18-19 makes an important addition to the Christ story, with the statement that, after Jesus had been put to death and before he ascended into heaven, he was "made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and preached to the spirits in prison [the dead in hell]". It is well established that the book known as the First Epistle of Peter was really written in the second century. If so, why was its unknown author the first to know about the descent to hell and how did he learn of it? If the descent into hell really happened, it was presumably to offer those he met some hope for deliverance.

The Devil has not gone to Hell. There's a widespread misconception that Satan resides in or rules Hell. Neither is true. In fact, during this time period Satan has access to Heaven and God Himself (see Job chapter 1).

When the final judgment is completed Satan will be thrown into the Lake of Fire as an eternal punishment. Those who have occupied Hell up to that time will also go into the Lake of Fire.

to get the keys of hades

Another Answer:

To fulfill Scripture and the sign of Jonah of His Messiahship. This was a sign to all believers that there will be a Resurrection for each of us.

The word translated hell here is 'sheol' in the Hebrew and 'hades' in the Greek. It simply means grave or pit for the dead who 'sleep' until their resurrection to the judgement process.

In Hades, Christ proclaimed His ultimate victory over death and Satan. He also released the souls of believers whom had died prior to the Resurrection.
