Dinosaurs, excluding birds, died out as the result of an asteroid impact 65.5 million years ago. Humans did not exist until 63 million years after the catastrophe was over. Our ancestors 65.5 million years ago were small mammals that survived by eating the small amounts of food that were available until the dust settled and there was sunlight again.
