The First Fleet did not land either in or on London. The First Fleet departed Portsmouth, England on 13 May 1787. It then travelled to Australia via the Canary Islands, Rio de Janeiro and South Africa, arriving in Port Jackson, New South Wales on 26 January 1788.
There were actually 3 places that the First Fleet stopped at. The first one that they stopped at was Teneriffe, in Canary Islands, Rio De Janeiro and Capetown.
The journey of the First Fleet from England to New South Wales was about 8 months. The ships could not carry enough supplies for everyone for that amount of time, which is why the First Fleet made three stops between England and NSW. Rio de Janeiro was a thriving port, and well stocked with rations (and fresh livestock) for the journey.
During the journey from England to Australia, the First Fleet had a supply of water on board. 15 tons of drinking water were taken aboard the ships. This was replenished at each of the stops made by the First Fleet, first at Tenerife, then Rio de Janeiro, then Capetown.Once the First Fleet arrived in Port Jackson, they were supplied with fresh water by the Tank Stream. This stream still runs underneath the streets of Sydney today. It remained the colony's chief source of fresh water for forty years, until it was supplemented by "Busby's Bore", also known as Lachlan Tunnel.
