I'm not sure that they did. Perhaps early in the war there was solid support among frontline soldiers (who, after all, have to believe that they are fighting a worthwhile cause) but I have been unable to find polling data on contemporary soldiers or veterans' attitudes toward the war. Most oral histories from veterans seem antiwar but that could be a question of who selected specific veterans to tell their stories. It also seems that with the passage of time, some veterans are "remembering" the war in a rosier glow.

How were the trenches organized during World War 1?

During World War I, trenches were organized into a network that typically included front-line, support, and reserve trenches. The front-line trench was closest to the enemy and housed soldiers for direct combat, while support trenches provided logistical aid and housed reinforcements. Behind them were reserve trenches, which held additional troops and supplies. This layered structure aimed to protect soldiers, facilitate movement, and sustain prolonged warfare in a static front.

What were the parts of a trench?

At the front there was the front line, then there was the support trench and at the back was a reserve trench.

When you talk about the front line what do you mean?

The front line refers to the soldiers who go into battle first. Back when armies lined up to shoot at each other across a plain field, these men were literally the front line of the army.

Did the trenches in World War 1 have a hierarchy?

There were differences in the function and importance of trenches. The first one (closest to the enemy) was also called the Front Line or the Fire Line. A 100 yards behind it you had the support trench and again some 100 yards behind, the reserve trench. And then you had the connecting trenches, who were just there so you could get from one trench to the other. There wasn't a real 'hierarchy' anmong trenches: the front line was most important for fighting, but the other two were important for their support facilities, radio and command rooms and as places for soldiers to rest from front line duties.
