Gladiators were not beaten unless they broke some rule or their instructor felt that they were slacking off. If they were training in a mock combat, they could be beaten by their opponent and hopefully learn how and why they were beaten and rectify their mistakes so as not to repeat them in a "for real" fight.
They used practice swords (dull, but could still seriously injure and possibly even kill), and wooden shields. They also trained against other Gladiators. I hope this helped :)

Most freed gladiators found some sort of work comparable with their training as fighters such as hiring themselves out to the army, or to a gladiatorial school as a trainer. Yes they did. Gladiators were owned and trained by sponsors ( similar to football teams today) and the different sponsors would match gladiators against each other. Often betting took place on the outcome of the battle. This was a big business owning gladiators and training them. A lot of prestige came with having the best "line up" of gladiators.
