A lot of Greeks thought it best to appraise Ares because of the fact that he was a God of War. The greeks thought that by appraising him and tributing things to him that their wars would be in their favor.
Aside from the Spartans, Ares was not widely worshiped in Greece. And while he was the God of War, most Achaean Greeks would have prayed to Athena in that regard. So Ares was much less important in Greece than in Rome.
Ares was a God. And Greeks told stories of Gods.

Wikipedia.org:
Ares ...is a major deity and a member of the Twelve Olympians, a son of Zeus and Hera, in Greek mythology. Though often referred to as the Olympian god of warfare, he is more accurately the god of bloodlust, or slaughter personified: "Ares is apparently an ancient abstract noun meaning throng of battle, war. He also presides over the weapons of war, the defence and sacking of cities, rebellion and civil order, banditry, manliness and courage.
There are a few legends about Ares, the most famous is his affair with Aphrodite. However, his contribution to mythology was great, as the other Olympian Gods, but not perhaps as great as Zeus's or Athena's.
Ares was one of the twelve Olympians in the ancient Greek civilisation. When nations would engage in war, people would pray to Ares that they would come out victorious.
In the video game, God of War, Kratos offered his life to Ares in exchange for success on the battlefield, which he later regretted due to the nature of the tasks in which Ares forced him to committ. Obviously, this is fiction.
In mythology, Ares took the side of the Trojans against the army of Menelaus until he was wouned by Diomedes.
Hope this helps.
Up until the battle of Thermopylae, the city-states of ancient Greece were constantly at war with one another. One city-state in particular, Sparta, focused heavily on War. At a young age of seven, Spartan boys would be taken from their homes and put to a very strict and brutal challenge in becoming a Spartan soldier. Many boys died before becoming soldiers. This meant the Spartan Army was considerably the strongest, as only the best were admitted to the ranks. It was at the battle of Thermopylae that the city-states finally put aside their differences and, for the first time, fought as a united country. And, even though they lost, it was because of that battle that the thousands of civil wars finally came to an end, and Greece entered the rest of the world as a single nation. Had that not happened, Greece would have remained an isolated region, bent on killing it's own people, and the legends, art, and knowledge of those ancient peoples would never have been introduced to the world. I hope I've answered your question.
He was the god of war and blood lust so in a way he was the one who would slaughter you if you didnt do as Zues said.
Because war was important to them.
He was called by the Greeks "Ares" well before the Romans called their Mars the same as Ares.
Ares is a god and the Greeks would have seen him as omnipotent, meaning he didn't have "special skills". What he had was a love of combat.
Ares was known as the "God of War" to the Greeks. This might count as a nickname. His name was often linked to the other gods when they were about war-like activities.. Early manes or Ares included "Enyalios" Ares might also be referred to as "son of Zeus and Hera"
I think you're getting your religions confused. The "One God" is the religion for Christians/Catholics, but Zeus/Ares were the belief long agoZeus and Ares are Greek gods, and Greeks do not believe in only one god.
