Rosalina's home planet. Poor thing was lost and will be stranded.
In super Mario galaxy (where Rosalina comes from) Rosalina looks after the stars (Lumas). So a luma revolves around her in Mario kart wii.
It begins when star bits fall on the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario is invited to have cake at Peach's castle. When Mario gets there, he meets a luma. This luma gave Mario the ability to spin! Mario goes to the castle. It turns out that Bowser has captured Peach! He escapes. Mario meets some other lumas who set off Mario to his first adventure. When you beat that galaxy, a luma called Lubba makes Mario the captain of his ship so he can rescue Peach. That sets off Mario to his adventures!
Two. To have another player join, just have someone else grab another wii remote and become an orange Luma. The second player can point the wii remote and collect star bits. Also, the Luma that second player controls can press (A) on most enemies to stop them in their tracks, press (A) on gold coins to have the Luma grabs one at a time and toss it to Mario. Unlike the first Super Mario Galaxy, the second player can attack most enemies. Just have the Luma freeze an enemy and shake the wii remote to make the Luma spin and knock the enemy it freezed.

His name is Lubba. he helps Mario in the beginning of the game and offers helpful advice about certain objects and characters throughout the game.
The stars she watches out for, are known collectively as Luma. If it was specifically a black star however, it's name is Polari and it serves as Rosalina's advisor.
