In an interview the band said that they named themselves Tokio Hotel because they would love to go and perform in Tokyo and spelling it with an i is how it is spelt in German. They chose Hotel because it is an internationally recognised word, nowhere spells it differently. :)

Their previous name was Devilish, and because they were performing in Clubs and stuff under that name, they eventually got signed on to a record company. Later they ended up changing their name to Tokio Hotel. They chose the name because they all love the city Tokyo and they stay in hotels a lot.

NO, Tokio Hotel is the bands name. THe place is called Tokyo. Bill and Tom live together in California.
He didn't join the band, he and the others were already called Devilish (started 2001) so they just changed name in 2004. He was 14 then.
