Revolutionary France, 1791 - 1794 In September, 1792, Robespierre was elected first deputy for Paris to the National Convention. On 27 July 1793, Robespierre was elected to the Committee of Public Safety. On August 22, 1793 he was elected President of the National Convention. Re-elected as President on June 4, 1794. He was also a member of The National Constituent Assembly, The National Assembly and was Deputy for the Third Estate of the Estates General.
Robespierre was a leader of "les montagnards", a hard-line group in the French assembly. "les montagnards" (the mountaineers) were named such because they occupied the upper seats in the assembly room.

Changes in the rights of the Second Estate as a result of the National Assembly included the abolition of feudalism. This in turn took away the seigneurial rights of the Second Estate.

The National Assembly was formed by the representatives of the Third Estate of the Estates General. After the French Revolution the National Assembly became known as the National Constituent Assembly.

Robespierre died on the guillotine. The threat of the Assembly turning on the Committe was alwys real and although he tried to commit suicide, that escape also failed him.
It was a very difficult group to admire but very few criticised their efforts. They operated the Reign of Terror and were the custodians of the National Razor.
