Tariffs particularly favored the North and their manufacturing plants. By imposing a Protective Tariff on imports from foreign lands, the Northern manufacturers would benefit because since imports from foreign nations, say Britain, were now very expensive, natives would buy from the much cheaper Northern manufacturers. This is what it means to be "protective." It was "protecting" the factories in the North.

The South particularly disliked these tariffs because they did not have any interest in the North benefiting from their money.

Jefferson Adams (President of the North) secretly wanted all the Northerns to move into the Southern states so he raised the prices to scare them away. Meanwhile in the South Delia Smith (Lesser know 'president') was trying to draw the northerners in my making their prices lower, which ended up working. Thats how the South ended up winning the Civil War and making slavery illegal.

The tariffs were levied on imports, to protect US manufacturing industry, which was nearly all in the North.

It was the South that needed the imports.

So the tariffs looked like the North taxing the South.

The economies of the North and south differed very much. the south was largely agrarian and completely dependent on northern industry and financial institutions. The North was heavily industrialized and in close competition with the largest industrial nation in the world at the time, (UK) and the businesses needed protective tariffs such as the ones put in place by Henry Clays American System (tariff of 1816).Tarrrifs could only drive prices of manufactured goods up in the south, so they opposed them.

Because the north couldn't afford the souths cotton,Lincoln passed the Morrill Tariff. He put 80% of it on just southerners in order to buy the cotton. However, many southerners went bankrupt&seceded. The us. constitution states that all taxes shall be uniform. So the south did the legal thang.
