After the Industrial Revolution, there was a massive decline in the amount of young men working in agriculture. They instead were attracted by the higher wages available in industries such as iron and coal. In 1829, the depression strongly affected Merthyr Tydfil. Workers' rights did not exist at that time; and sudden dismissal, wage reductions and short-term working had always been imposed by the iron and coal masters to maximise their own profits. A sudden downturn in the market saw the ironmasters quickly dismiss surplus workers and cut the wages of those in work. The working classes were then immediately plunged into hardship, widening the gap in class.

The Merthyr Rising of 1831 was precipitated by a combination of the ruthless collection of debts, frequent wage reductions, and the imposition of "truck shops". Some workers were paid in specially minted coins or credit notes, known as "truck", which they could exchange only at shops owned by their employers. Many of the workers fiercely objected to both the price and quality of the goods sold in these shops.

Throughout May 1831, the coal miners and others who worked for William Crawshay took to the streets of Merthyr Tydfil, calling for reform, and protesting against the lowering of their wages and general unemployment in the area.

Between 7,000 and 10,000 workers marched, and for four days magistrates and ironmasters were under siege in the "Castle Hotel" in the town, with the protesters effectively controlling the whole of Merthyr. Soldiers were called in from the Brecon Barracks, these clashed with the rioters, and many on both sides were seriously injured or killed. Despite the hope that they could negotiate with the owners, the skilled workers lost control of the movement. Several of the supposed leaders of the riots were arrested. One of them, popularly known as Dic Penderyn, was hanged for stabbing a soldier in the leg, leading to him becoming known as the first local working-class martyr. It was claimed in 1876 that it was not Lewis who stabbed Private Black, but another man, Ianto Parker, who fled to America following the incident in order to avoid prosecution and the death penalty. These claims have never been fully verified, although Lewis' innocence is widely accepted throughout Merthyr Tydfil.

Where does the name Merthyr Tydfil come from?

In modern Welsh 'merthyr' means 'martyr'. But there is good evidence that in early Welsh the word could also mean 'site of martyrdom / shrine of a martyr'. Traditionally the Old Parish Church of Merthyr Tydfil was the site of martyrdom and burial for the local saint - Saint Tydfil - who still features on the borough coat of arms. The only effigy of her used to form part of the town's war memorial, but this was stolen some time during the 1990's. Saint Tydfil was one of the daughters of the equally mythical Brychan Brycheiniog - a fifth century King of Breconshire who had many children who seem to have spent most of their lives Christianising south-east Wales (and occasionally getting killed by pagan Picts for their trouble). The name Merthyr Tydfil (Merthyr Tudful in modern Welsh orthography) seems to go back at least to medieval times, but the story may have been 'improved' more recently. Much 'ancient' Welsh history was in fact 're-imagined' by the Flemingston Apothecary / Stonemason Iolo Morgannwg in the 1750's - and Iolo's son Dafydd ab Iolo kept a school on Three Salmon Street in Merthyr Tydfil in the late Eighteenth Century, where he seems likely to have helped the newly industrialised town discover its roots. The names Tydfil and Tanglwstl (Tydfil's sister) are still sometimes used in the Merthyr area, as is Rhun (according to the myth, Tydfil's brother).

Similarities between merthyr tydfil and Cardiff bay?

Both have had and been part of one of the greatest industrial periods in history. In their day both areas had a massive volume of immigration from across the UK and Europe to work in the Docks at Cardiff and the Guest Iron works in Merthyr Tydfil. Both had a reasonable employment history until the mid 70's/80's when for political reasons the production areas of Merthyr Tydfil when seen to close mirrored by the docks in Cardiff where imports and exports dropped leaving huge amounts of people out of work. Both areas fell in to decline with many houses and industrial sites falling to ruin

Was the Capital of Wales Merthyr before Cardiff?

Cardiff became the current Welsh capital in 1953. In part this was because the new queen (Elizabeth II) wanted to visit all of the British capital cities, and Wales didn't have one. The capital before Cardiff was Deganwy. But Deganwy was razed by Dafydd ap Llewellyn Fawr around 1240, as part of a scorched earth retreat before the invading English army of Henry III. No new capital was built to replace Deganwy, and by 1282 Wales had ceased to be a recognisable independent nation anyway. Deganwy was not Wales' only medieval capital - several other towns (Aberffraw was one) acted as capital cities at various points - following the fortunes of Wales' dynastic wars. Owain Glyndwr founded his Parliament at Machynlleth, and the Lord Rhys sat at Carreg Cennen. Neither of these towns is normally considered a former capital, but in all but name they were.
