Peasant revolts in the history of tsarist Russia are almost too numerous to count. There were at least 1,000 official revolts. By the time of World War One, the Tsar was fighting an unpopular war against powerful German armies, and poverty and hunger were a large part of Russia's problems. For years there was an intellectual underground plotting to remove the Tsar. The entire situation in Russia in 1917 was out of control, and Tsar Nicholas Romanov was clearly to blame. He was deposed in March of 1917.

Tsar Nicholas II. His reign lasted from 1894-1917. He was murdered in 1918. Technically, the last Tsar of Russia was actually Michael II, the brother of Nicholas. Nicholas abdicated in favour of Michael in 1917, and he immediately became the next Tsar. He himself abdicated the following day, meaning he is often disregarded. However, he was still Tsar for approximately 1 day!

Nicholas the Second was the last czar of Russia. He reigned from 1894 to 1917. He was married to Czarina Alexandra and had 5 children: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei. He and his family were killed by firing squad on July 17, 1918. His arrest and death were the beginnings of the Bolsheviks overthrow of czarist Russia. Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov was the only son of Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia. He was born in 1904 and was the heir apparent to the Russian throne before he tragically died in 1918 along with his family during the Russian Revolution.
