Because there was no other form of transportation that was faster than a horse.
No, the Pony Express used horses.
Many of the Pony Express horses may have been the precursor to the Quarter Horse but at the time Quarter Horses as a breed did not exist. But many of the horses were of a stock type that was popular for cattle work with cow hands. They were sturdy, athletic and surefooted for travel over rough terrain.

Is this a chicken or the egg question? There was no pony express before horses.
They probably carried a knife in their pockets if they had any. If they didn't they probably put it somewhere safe.

they used the pony express
they could use math by having their horse's race time and then by math figuring out what their horse's race time would be. Also, horses are measured in hands, which are measurements of 4inches. How tall a horse is determines if it's a horse or a pony, and there are different competition divisions for horses and ponies.

Pony express
No. Western and English horses are trained to do two different things. I've ridden both styles and the horses are just trained differently to a point. Most western riders use curb bits that add more pressure to a horses mouth if the reins are pulled on. To avoid hurting the mouth they ride with a loose rein and usually teach a horse to neck rein. English riders typically use some form of snaffle bit and prefer to keep their horses in a more collected frame. But many English riders also teach their horses to neck rein.
