∙ 14y agoThe Byzantines faced 2 problems: in the West they were faced with Christian powers who were jealous of the great wealth still enjoyed by Byzantium, particularly from rising Venice. In the East they were opposed by the growing Ottoman empire. Gradually over the centuries the Ottomans took control of Byzantine territory until it extended hardly beyond the walls of Constantinople. When the Emperor had called upon the West as fellow Christians for help, instead the Crusader armies had seized the opportunity to steal as much Byzantine land and wealth for themselves as possible, even sacking Constantinople itself. In some ways, we should be surprised the empire lasted so long: although there is too little to show for it now, Byzantium stood for 1200 years.

∙ 12y agothe roman empire didn't fall, just the western part of the empire, the byzantine empire was the roman empire they called themselves the Romans and constantinople was called rome. The reason the western empire fell was due to corruption of the aristocracy and so called barbarians moving in from the north, the barbarians were forced to move primarily because of pressure by the mongols and a variety of other reasons. And because the eatern empire was basically separate from the western it would be relativley unaffected by the west's problems. Byzantine empire wasn't even a word at the time this was happening there was simply Rome
