In the Navy, a Captain is O6, equivalent to a Colonel in the remaining branches. A Navy Lieutenant is O3, equivalent to Captain in the other branches, and a Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade is O2, equivalent to a First Lieutenant in the other branches.

Currently there are only 3 branches of Armed Service, even in the USA. Air Force, Army, and Navy. People commonly think that the Marines and the Coast Guard are their own branches, which is highly inaccurate as they are both a part of the Navy. The services provided by Tacp - calling in close air support and such - are exclusive to the Air Force - none of the other branches has this capacity. So Air Force personnel are attached to units from other branches in order to provide those units with close air support capabilities.
