The economy of the South was devastated during the Civil War and for many years thereafter. The North was so rich after the war, that they were able to build the first transcontinental railroad in the country, from Iowa to California. The economy of the South was built on Slavery, which came to an end in the war. The South was badly beaten by the war. During the War Between the States, the South suffered greater hardship than the North in several ways . The South had rampant inflation that made it difficult for people to buy food. The destruction of Southern cities was greater than in the North. The North experienced nothing like Sherman's utter destruction of Atlanta and his subsequent ruthless march to the sea. As a percent of the populaton the South suffered many more casualties than the North. Then, of course, the way of life in the South was greatly changed and disrupted, whereas the life in the North remained pretty much unchanged.

Answer 2:

Blockade by the Union Navy, stopping them exporting their cotton in exchange for war supplies.

Lack of industrial manufacturing capability.

Union troops licensed to liberate any slaves they found during their Southern campaigns - much reducing the labour force.

In the final year, Grant ended the system of prisoner-exchange. The Confederates with their smaller population were doomed to run out of manpower.

Sherman's March to the Sea (and Sheridan's destruction of the Shenandoah farmland) wrecked the Southern economy, starving troops and civilians alike, and sending the Confederate dollar into a nosedive.
