During the Age of Exploration (or, Discovery) in the 15th-17th centuries, the Spanish, among other European explorers, initially came to the Americas in search of a water-route to the Far East. Discovering the New World, they then came to conquer new territories, accumulate new wealth, and otherwise add to the prestige of their homeland.

"El Requerimiento" of 1513 was a declaration by the Spanish King and Queen about their divinely ordained right to take possession of the territories of the New World and to subjugate, exploit and, when necessary, to fight the native inhabitants. The Requirement was read in Spanish to native peoples to inform them of Spain's rights to conquest. Those who subsequently resisted conquest were considered to having evil intentions. The Spaniards considered those who resisted as defying God's plan.

In Spain anyone who defied the King or refused to give labor and agricultural products to their lords were seen as resisting God and being evil or in league with the devil. Much of Spain had been recently "Reconquered" from the Muslim leaders based in Morocco. The conquest of the new World was seen as an extension of God plan to continue the conquest and spread Christianity.

Although gold, power and competition with other European powers was a huge motivating force and goal it was not how they justified it to themselves.
