Like the other European powers, Spain's investment in exploration was made in hopes of expanding their empire. At that time the surest and most profitable way of doing this would be to find a faster trade route to the east. Columbus was believed to have discovered the western route to the east. As the age of exploration continued, the goals shifted. Wealth,(Gold to be exact) and the expansion of the country's territorial boundaries were all important.
