To keep the "South" or Condfederate States of America from leaving the USA.

As a Southerner by birth, I still believe that the Victory of the Union was a good thing as we worked together as a nation to defeat tyranny in several wars afterward. If we had been two separate and weaker nations, we may have lost the first or second World Wars. That being the case we would all be speaking German or Japanese. The Union expected a quick victory and people showed up with picnic baskets to watch the first battle expecting the Union soldiers soundly whip the Southern "Rebel" army. It did not turn out that way and the picnics were overrun by retreating Union soldiers and advancing Confederate soldiers.
