The vikings were usually the 2nd sons of kings of chieftains. The first son was born into the glory of their father, so the second and third sons would have to make a name for themselves. This was usually done by going aviking.
The main point, however, was to trade. They would typically ask their father for a longship and trade goods, get their friends and friends of the family together to man the ship, and go around trading. Should they come across an easy target, a place that had a lot of movable goods or gold and not a lot in the way of defenses, they would of course take advantage and raid the village or monastery.
They then would have these easily gotten free goods to trade with now. Gold and jewelry they would bring back, but items like Lumber, animal pelts, honey, butter, walrus ivory, and whale fat would be common items to trade for, along with grain.
