the viking slaves had to do whatever their owners tells them to do. If they were told to clean they had to clean, if they were told to wash their back they had to wash their back etc... One of the way for a slave to have freedom is that if they acted brave in front of their master they may get their freedom or the master would treat them more nicer. The other way to gain their freedom is to buy their freedom. They had to pay their owners how much their currently worth to gain freedom.

Almost always the reason for any action is money. They could sell those they had caught in raids. Of course, they took loot but slaves brought them more money. The same reason occurred for slavery in the South before the Civil War.

Yes, early on, Vikings had slaves. This was something they gave up in time, though I have not seen information as to when, though certainly it was in the Middle Ages.
