They built it for their Gladiators to battle in. They had animal v man, man v man, animal v animal, and they sometimes flooded it and had naval battles. there was nowhere else they could have done all this so they built it.
The coliseum has never been built in London. That's the Globe theatre you're thinking of. :-)

There was no fire damage in the coliseum. If you are asking about the great Fire of Rome while Nero was emperor the coliseum didn't exist at that point. The palace of Nero was built over the area that was destroyed and the area where the coliseum is built was his lake.
