Why did they call California eureka?

The term eureka is Greek for "I have found it." Its association with California came about during the Gold Rush of the 19th century. With all the rush and hype to find gold, you can imagine miners shouting "Eureka!" upon finding some. Because of such a rich history, the term has even become California's official motto. There's also a city in northern California called Eureka. How's that for a pot o' gold? =P
