Labor Day was first celebrated in 1882. Members of the Central Labor Union took a day off to protest the deplorable conditions endured by American workers. Men, women and children struggled to get work in locations that offered nothing but long hours, hazardous environments and minimal pay. Over time the people who suffered through these grueling conditions banded together to form unions and demand shorter shifts, safety measures and fair wages. This led to the establishment of the first Labor Day, which began with a parade that was intended to display the "strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" and celebrate the American workforce.
