There were several causes that ushered in the use of the bomb. The overwhelming consensus of opinion was to use the bomb - but not all the President's advisors agreed. President Truman later said that if he had a weapon that would save American lives and did not use it, the American public would never forgive him.

Manpower was beginning to become a problem for the United States; some projections for the invasion of Japan predicted 1 million US wounded and dead; the recent battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa indicated a stiffening Japanese resistance the closer Americans approached to the home islands proper.

All of these reasons added up to the inevitable decision to use the bomb(s).
