The cross is a painful, and humiliating form of death. With a person's arms stretched out, it cuts of the ability to breathe easily. The person can push up with their feet to relieve the constriction a bit, only to tire and have to go back to hanging from their arms. They posted "King Of The Jews" above His head as a way to mock Him, and allow others to scorn Him.
