This was a technical challenge and a demonstration of the how-to for the Eiffel company, which was specialized in metallic-framed constructions. The use of steel allowed the tower to reach a height of 300 meters (about 1000 feet). A tower made of rock would have collapsed, its base crushed under the weight.
