Yes he was called the "King of Spades" early in the Civil War -- not the Ace of Spades. He was called this because he liked to dig in trenches. The practice started in Vietnam where soldiers would leave the ace of spades, known as the death card, on bodies of Viet Cong. While the Vietnamese did not associate the ace of spades with death immediately, it was an effective weapon in the psychological battle with the Viet Cong.
