Horses were originally used because Tanks were not around. Once tanks were invented and employed for use the horse was continued in the military because they could haul ammunition and weapons up steep inclines and through places were vehicles could not go. Once cargo style planes and all terrain military vehicles were in use the horse was discontinued in the military.
