As the start of the US Civil War unfolded a number of Union army officers decide to resign and join the new Confederate army. Approximately 296 joined and many had been excellent Union officers.
Kansas joined the union a few months prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Kansas was admitted into the Union on January 29, 1861 becoming the 34th state to join the Union.
Nebraska- In 1867 it was the 37th state to join the Union.
The Union raised money to fight the Civil War through loans and taxes, just the way governments do today. Also the used the draft, if someone did not want to join, they would fine them to get out of fighting but less than 2% of union soldiers were drafted.
