Why did we have astrolabe?

An astrolabe was a mechanical model, often made from brass, that showed the planets in their orbits round the sun, controlled by gear-wheels that made them move by the correct amounts.

The English author Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a book about astrolabes for his ten-year-old son in about 1380.
