Becoming mentally aware in a nightmare has no particular symbolic meaning. It only means that one part of your brain initiated the process of awakening, but the process was not finished so you did not become fully awake. It is the sort of common error that happens occasionally. It could be described as a "hiccup" of the wake/sleep function. The "how" involves various biochemicals and signals in your brain that effect your stages of sleep and levels of consciousness. For more information, see the "sleep" article in Wikipedia.
Not that I am aware of.
Mentally alert...is an internal OR external awareness. It means being aware of ones own thoughts and/or aware of ones external surroundings. When a person is mentally alert, they may have a sense of"why" they, or someone else may have said or did something.lamont_a@hotmail.com

You cannot force someone to become self-aware. A person needs to choose to become self-aware. The best way to become self-aware is to meditate.
It is not possible, except mentally.
