You needed subtitles in a silent movie/film because it was obviously silent. The only sound was music to help describe the scene - E.G. The Chase was a piece of music wrote for a running scene. So you needed subtitles to say what was happening...... E.G. you couldn't say anything and it was hard to act out things like... 'the next day ' or ' 1 hour later ' so they would come up on a plain black screen so you could understand what was happening.
They could not overlay words digitally atop a frame of film so they inserted dialogue frames separately after action scenes. Basically because during the era of silent film, they lacked digital technology.
