Guinea pigs are masters at hiding their illnesses. They hide it because they used to be very vulnerable to predators. So they couldn't let them know that they were sick, or it would of been an easy picking for the predators.
It could of been an URI (one of the most common guinea pig illnesses out there). He could of been sick weeks ago, and you wouldn't of noticed. Please don't be hard on yourself about this. Many owners deal with this. He must have been a very lucky piggie to be with you :)
