Beowulf doesn't use weapons in his fight against Grendel because he is aware he has a charm that will make it impossible to kill him with a weapon. Therefore, he feels the only way he will be able to defeat the monster is by fighting him in hand to hand combat without any weapons.

Beowulf doesn't use a sword to kill Grendel because it would not be honorable. "Beowulf" is an Anglo-Saxon poem, and Anglo-Saxon's hold their heroes to very high standards. Needless to say, the easiest and most efficient way of destroying your enemy is not the best way. Where is the honor? Characteristics admired by the Anglo-Saxons are honor, strength, courage, loyalty to your king, bravery, and being the best of the best. By killing Grendel with his bare hands, Beowulf is doing the honorable thing by facing Grendel with no weapon, because Grendel has no weapon himself. This will also give Beowulf a chance to show his strength and courage. By winning in such unlikely circumstances, Beowulf will bring honor and recognition to his king. It will also earn him his title as the most epic hero, since he traveled across the sea to slay a monster that no one had been able to defeat before.

THE ABOVE ANSWER IS NOT CORRECT! Grendel has magic protection against any weapon made by man. Therefore, a sword would not be effective. Beowulf uses his bare hands because that is the only weapon that he has that will work. Afterall, if your answer were correct, why would Beowulf then kill Grendel's mother with a sword?

He knows that since Grendel is a troll, no sword would be effective against him, since troll skin was too thick and hard for a blade to be able to cut it.
