You may read the full story in Luke 2 but to explain shortly, the Romans ordered a Census of their Empire which required Joseph with Mary to go to his patriarchal home town of Bethlehem. While there, Jesus was born. When the time came they left and went to Jerusalem as was their custom with newborns. Soon afterwards, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth, in the City of Galilee..

Luke 2:39-40New International Version (NIV)

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.
