Why didn't early astronomers know that the universe is larger than our solar system?

well, they didnt have the technology we have today such as hi spec microscopes and computers to record data and such, so they couldnt of possibly known that the universe is larger than our solar system.
Also, not sure if you know, scientists years ago belived that the earth was flat and there was an some sort of edge people could fall off :D
