They believed in the 'human wall' - that they would do better and were capable of defeating an attacker in open battle, and with no walls to fall back on, their soldiers would fight all the harder and more desperately.
When King Philip of Macedonia threatened them with 'If I win this war you will be slaves forever' Sparta responded: 'if'.
