In our own numeric system we use the same set of numbers (0 to 9) to indicate units, tens, hundreds, thousands and so on. The only difference is where each number appears: 52 means 5x10 and 2x1 = 52. A zero is needed if a position is vacant: 502 means 5x100 + 0x10 + 2x1 = 502.

In the ancient Egyptian system, entirely different signswere used for different values: single upright strokes for 1 to 9, an inverted U for tens, a spiral shape for 100 and so on. Any number can be represented using this system without the need for a zero, because it does not depend on the place of the number in a sequence.

52 is represented by 5 inverted U-shapes (50) and 2 single upright strokes.

502 is represented by 5 spiral shapes (500) and two vertical strokes (2) = 502 - the absence of tens is simply indicated by not including any inverted U-shapes.
