Travel was hard, it was dangerous, and the roads were bad. It took a long time to go anywhere. A man who wanted to go 30 miles by horse could only travel about 10 miles a day. Which means that to cover the 30 miles it took 3 days to get there and another 3 days to get back. So, that means you left your fields, animals, home for 6 days or more to go 30 miles. This was a lot in this time. The people of the middle ages also didn't view night the way we do since there were no lights anywhere at night. Night time was considered a whole different world and the night air dangerous. It was better to stay home unless you had to travel.
They travelled on horseback, in coaches or - on not too long distances - on litters. For safety reasons and also a bit just for the company they usually travelled in groups. If they were very rich and if they were nobles, these groups might consist of their own retainers. Merchants - also the rich ones - usually travelled in groups with other merchants, but the groups might also contain people like pilgrims and other travellers.
