Because scientists are educated people who understand that their results and reports may be published and read by people outside of America.
What seems strange is that some people still use Miles rather than Kilometres.
The Metric system is more widely used. The Imperial (American) system is only used in three countries, therefore it's just more practical to use metric. Metric also uses easier numbers. For example 100 cm = 1 m or 1000 m = 1k m. Whereas the Imperial system uses difficult numbers. For example 5280 ft = 1 mi. or 1760 yds. = 1 mi.
We use kilometers instead of centimeters for the same reason that we use miles instead of inches between cities.
1.0 km = 100,000 cm
1.0 mi = 63360 in
It is far easier to use kilometers than to use centimeters for distances between cities.
They needed a worldwide standard of weights amd measures and decided the best match to all fields and constants was metric.
The more accurate, more important question is: Why American DON'T use the metric system ?
America doesn't use the metric system in general. We use the English system with Inches, feet, etc.
Kilometer is exactly 1000 meters, which is the international standard unit for length.
We use kilometers because there are 100,000 centimeters in one kilometer. You use the largest measurement that fits.
Because a centimetre, which is approx the width of the little finger nail is too small a unit.
There are 21.74799173 miles in 35 kilometers. 35 kilometers x 1 mile/1.609344 kilometers = 21.74799173 miles 1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers
Well it is because the English invent it first and it is used to measured extreme length. Later when they invent Kilometre they realized they wanna measure shorter distance instead of always measure by .96 so they made it smaller.
40,389.127 miles in 65,000 kilometers
There are 7,917.511731 miles in 12,742 kilometers. 12,742 kilometers x 1 mile/1.609344 kilometers = 7,917.511731 miles 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers
There are 1.609344 kilometers in one mile. Therefore to convert kilometers to miles, value in kilometers has to be divided by amount of kilometers in one mile: 4 kilometers = [kilometers] / 1.609344 = 4 / 1.609344 = 2.485 miles
Miles or kilometers
How about kilometers instead of miles
So far, they have been able to go about 12 miles deep, 1/5th of the crust.
In Brazil they use the metric system, thus using kilometers instead of miles.
4756 miles or 7652.4 Kilometers
There are 21.74799173 miles in 35 kilometers. 35 kilometers x 1 mile/1.609344 kilometers = 21.74799173 miles 1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers
228,000,000 kilometers = 141,672,630 miles
40,389.127 miles in 65,000 kilometers
There are 7.4029824 kilometers in 4.6 miles. 4.6 miles x 1.609344 kilometers/1 miles = 7.4029824 kilometers 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers
Well it is because the English invent it first and it is used to measured extreme length. Later when they invent Kilometre they realized they wanna measure shorter distance instead of always measure by .96 so they made it smaller.
There are 468.9714752 miles in 793 kilometers. 793 kilometers x 1 mile/1.6909344 kilometers = 468.9714752 miles 1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers
There are 37,903.64273 miles in 61,000 kilometers. 61,000 kilometers x 1 mile/1.609344 kilometers = 37,903.64273 miles 1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers
