Unfortunately, yes, Christians are persecuted in the modern world. Of course they are not thrown to the lions or crucified, but in many countries that have a state religion or are atheistic, they are persecuted economically, educationally, and their civil and religious rights are restricted.

STILL??? I think fundamentalist extremists are a fairly new development. Fundamentalists wouldn't feel any need to be extreme if everybody else agreed with them, and under the Pope, everybody agreed or died trying not to. Left alone, the middle east would be a much more peaceful place. Fundamentalists feel there is more at stake if they don't defend their beliefs. They feel it's a sin to not defend fundamentals like a 7 day creation (if we're talking about Christian fundamentalists), literal world-wide flood, etc. Moderates believe that arguing these finer points is the real sin if it alienates a potential brother.
Christians who were persecuted were Saint Paul,Peter and all the apostles excluding John. The time of the Roman Empire, they are some great saints like Lawrence,Ignatius of Antioch,Most of the pope of the first, second, third century. In the modern times,Christians were persecuted in China,Vietnam,Myanmar and the North Korea.During world war 2,Saint Maiximilian Kolbe is one of them.

Yes, Christians face severe persecution in North Korea. The government strictly controls all religious activities and considers them a threat to the regime. Christians are often imprisoned, tortured, or even killed for their faith.
