The Sermon on the Mount is so important because it is the first formal, public declaration by Jesus of His 'doctrine.' To understand this sermon is to begin to wrap your mind around who Jesus is, and what the Kingdom of God is like ideally. It is also a key portion of Scripture, containing both the Beatitudes and The Lord's Prayer. As literature, it is familiar to educated people.
The Sermon on the Mount gives the believer first of all the Beatitudes which describe for us the quality of life of a citizen of God's kingdom. Each beatitude is to be applied and developed in every Christian and carries a strong promise of ultimate good for those who develop the blessed life. The Standard is God's perfection. A Christian's life can conform to the standards of the Sermon only if we allow God through the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us. The Sermon pictures what God desires to make us if we will offer ourselves to Him as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). It is Jesus' invitation to listeners to become and continue to be His disciples.
The Beatitudes, or blessings. These set forth the ideal citizen of Christ's kingdom. The qualities described and approved are the opposite of those that the world values.
But for the Christian this can only be achieved through the working of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
"For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" -- Rom 14:17.
that's sets the standard for how we are to live
Because it gives us good rules for Christian living, but it is no more important to Christians than the rest of The Bible.
