The patient could have got an disease from the patient, so to prevent the disease from spreading, they wash their hands so they don't catch the disease and hopefully not spread to other people.

Pasteur's germ theory
They were not careful and the patients had to be wide awake during surgeries. the doctors would wear normal clothes while performing surgeries and the did not need to wash their hands or keep hygiene (at least that's what they thought) and most patients would not be alive to see another day!
Your hands get bacteria (germs) on them from touching things. If you don't wash your hands, then you touch your mouth or you pick up food with your hands and eat the food, that bacteria can then get in your mouth, and some of it can be bad enough to make you very sick. There are some germs that you can have on your hands that can give you diarrhea, make you vomit, and just generally make you feel really lousy. Other types of bacteria can actually kill you. Many years ago, like in the 1500s and 1600s, doctors used to operate on people without washing their hands first. As a result, many of their patients died. Now that all doctors wash their hands before doing surgery, there is a much higher survival rate.
The aseptic technique is performing a procedure using sterile conditions. Aseptic technique was first used around 1847 by Ignaz Semmelweis who suggest to all doctors to wash their hands before and after seeing patients, other doctors dismissed his theory.
Florence Nightingale taught people and doctors to wash there hands. The doctors would examine a dead body (look inside and see why they died) then help a women give birth or do surgery. Some doctors still don't wash there hands. Your parent/ Gaurdian would know if they didn't. You're safe. That is what happened. P.S doctors did not wash because they thought the were to good to be clean. :)

How often a beautician sanitizes her hands will depend upon the person. It would be good practice to wash their hands between each customer and between different duties.
