Voodoo or Vodou is a mix of African religious traditions, Catholic beliefs and practices, and folk magic. Some Haitians practice it either because it is a part of their family's customs and beliefs, or because it called to them.
The main religions practiced in Haiti are Catholicism, Protestantism, and Vodou. Catholicism is predominant, but Vodou, a syncretic religion with African roots, is also widely practiced alongside Christianity. Some Haitians also practice Protestantism, with various denominations present in the country.
Haiti is majority Christian, but many Haitians also practice Voodoo. (It is not common to practice both Christianity and Voodooism)

While voodoo dolls are often seen as an ancient ritual to some, there are still cultures that practice the use of dolls. In Haiti, people who practice with voodoo dolls are called "vodouists." In the United States there is still some voodoo culture in the south, such as Lousiana.
Grandmothers are just other people. Like all people, there are some who practice voodoo and many who do not. It depends on their culture, how they grew up and what they choose to do.
