Why do Indians have more than one god?

It is because many people bring ideas and indians categorize gods and their work and for example there is a god with an elephant head and he is actually a kid and i think this god is actually worshipped by mothers and children because a mother feels a certain connection as if it is her own child and a child prays to him because it is more easier to communicate with a little boy god than an adult one like vishnu or shiva{i mean that is what they say!}
