Shame is the most important societal taboo in Japanese culture. Any bringing of shame on the family often results in a need to do some form of " compensation." Impossible though it may seem to American culture more used to politicians having "no shame," in Japan the politicians resign as a way of showing compensation for the "shame" they have caused to their family or their country. It is a long-standing way of behavior in their culture, good or bad it may be. It is often referred to as loss of face.
