If washing is for praying or for fasting, then it is logic to be subject to the religion requirements and instructions for how to wash.

They wash themselves to make sure they are physically and spiritually clean. They wash their face hands and feet but it's done in a certain way. They make sure they are dressed right, women covering like they would to go outside and same for men.

I don't know about Hindu's but Muslims wash their feet as far as the ankle 3 times as part of Wudu (the washing pattern completed before offering prayer).
